KBIS | Counter Culture

The 2014 Kitchen and Bath Industry Show (KBIS) made its return to Las Vegas this year – over 75,000 visitors wandered the halls of the Las Vegas Convention Centre over 3 days. Pouring through the new finishes, materials, appliances, and systems first-hand is very much a Kitchen Designers’ “kid in a candy store” scenario.

Sub Zero & Wolf showed off their new lines at a private event held at the Mandarin Residential Suites. Three luxury suites decked out by Bruce Anderson Interiors; the working kitchens featured the New Generation appliances from Wolf and Sub Zero. The most obvious change in the Wolf line has been in the appearance of their wall ovens.  I’ve shown the Transitional double oven pictured left.  There’s also a Contemporary series, and Professional that sports the iconic red knobs.  The Contemporary and Transitional series are a huge aesthetic improvement over their previous lines.

Wolf has also added to their “lifestyle” appliances with an integrated coffee maker.  It looks quite slick in both “Transitional” and “Contemporary”, but the nicest feature is the milk system.  Rather than having to clean milk residue out of the plumbing as has been the case in most coffee machines, Wolf’s system is self contained, allowing you to simply remove it and wash it in the dishwasher.

Hopea | Scandinavian Designer Jewelry

This past May we welcomed Cosima of Hopea into our showroom for a popup shop. Cosima has a beautiful collection of exquisite and rare jewelry primarily from mid-century Scandinavia. If you missed the first trunk show, you’ll have a second chance to see these exquisit pieces first-hand. The Hopea collection returns to Inform for a second popup shop on November 29th to December 1st. Just in time to pick up very special Christmas gifts for the ones you love. Below, Cosima shares with us insight into the origin of a few of her pieces.

By the late 1950s, design had become a symbol of regional identity in the Nordic countries. Given that jewelry was seen as lagging behind other areas of design, revitalizing the craft became a national interest. Certain young designers, many in their twenties, had already established their own modern workshops and were more than poised to rise to the occasion. Below is a brief look at some of these pioneering designers; each from a different Nordic country. Each designer had their own unique aesthetic as they explored beyond the boundaries of jewelry making of the time.

Pre-iSaloni 2012 | Milan Musings

2012 will be my 6th year at the Milan iSaloni furniture fair. I am travelling with Niels Bendtsen who is at his 47th fair…

Milan design week is exhausting and energizing, foggy and sunny, trend-setting and too-trendy, long days, short nights.

_
A typical day starts with an early breakfast at the Hotel Cavour with fair maps and daytimer calendars plotting how we will be splitting up some meetings and getting together for others. A 15 minute walk through Giardini Pubblici to the Palestro Metro station is probably the only pause for air in the day before we board the already-jampacked train enroute to the fairgrounds.

Unique Lives & Experiences | Featuring Bensen Furniture | cont.

We were invited to, not only enjoy a wonderful evening exploring the intriguing past of Canada’s 27th Governor General, but to create a suitable stage for her to speak on.

This was no easy task – Honourable Michaëlle Jean fled from torture in Haiti with her family as a child and began her career co-founding a network of shelters, across Canada, to help women and their children escape voilent situations. She went on to achieve what most could only dream of and, in 2009, started the Michaëlle Jean Foundation promoting youth and the arts in an effort for social change and awareness. Who better to advocate “that we should never bow down in the face of a challenge.”. Many went home inspired and feeling a little stronger that night.

In light of Jean’s unfaltering care for a healthy home, we created a simple “domestic / home” arrangement, the majority of the pieces displayed were designed and/or manufactured in Canada.

Unique Lives & Experiences | Featuring Bensen Furniture

Tuesday February 7th, Honourable Michaelle Jean speaks of her life and career working as a journalist and broadcaster for the CBC and Radio-Canada and later, as the Governor General of Canada. Inform is proud to be providing the on-stage furnishings for this and several other Unique Lives & Experiences events. Many of the pieces were designed and are manufactured in Vancouver by Bensen. Bensen was established 21 years ago and since it’s inception, has been owned and operated by Niels Bendtsen, a highly regarded designer from Denmark who now calls Vancouver home.
