Antonio Citterio | Master of Modernism

1950 Meda, Italy: a pioneer in furniture design was born. One of the most under-stated designers in the business today, Citterio continues to design countless objects that most designers could only dream of creating.

_

Citterio graduated in architecture at the Politecnico di Milano and since 1972 continues to design for most of the leading furniture and accessory manufacturers world-wide, such as B&B Italia, Flexform, Flos, Iittala, Kartell, and Vitra. B&B Italia’s Maxalto collection is designed and coordinated exclusively by Antonio Citterio.

He has also been engaged in architectural works, dealing with construction projects and interiors, both in Italy and abroad. Citterio holds lectures and conferences and his work has been extensively exhibited and published.

George Nelson Clocks | Time & Time Again

George Nelson created some of the most unique and recognizable clocks today. Usually reflecting graphical forms taken from organic inspirations, these clocks echo through history as true design classics.

Born in Hartford, Connecticut in 1908, Nelson studied Architecture at Yale University, where he graduated in 1928 and also received a bachelor degree in fine arts in 1931. George Nelson was part of a generation of architects that found too few projects and turned successfully toward product, graphic and interior design.

George Nelson Associates created the first clocks for Howard Miller(son of Herman) in 1947. Howard Miller discontinued the line in the 1980’s, Vitra snatched up the rights and put the clocks back into production in the 90’s. The original clock designs were simply given numbers by Howard Miller. Clock 2238 which we know as the Eye Clock was marketed in Howard Miller brochures in diagonal position, not horizontal.

‘Chairless’ sitting by VITRA

www.vitra.com/chairless

Introduced at this years Salone de Mobile the Vitra ‘Chairless’ is referred to as a tool for the modern nomad.

A simple strap uses the tension created by the opening form of the human body to provide the user with a mobile seating support system.

Designed by Chilean architect Alejandro Aravena, the inspiration was taken from support straps used by the Ayoreo Indians (native to the border region between Paraguay and Bolivia).

Aravena’s designs follow the principle of ‘irreducibility’. His works are reduced to the most utilitarian of forms.

Wonderful World of VITRA

Many companies we work with represent more than just the furniture they create. Vitra has been producing classics since 1957 but along the way the brand has engaged in many projects to raise global design awareness.

The Vitra compound contains not only factories, but galleries, conference rooms and research facilities all designed by world reknowned architects. Even their fire station is designed by Zaha Hadid.

Above a beautiful display of Jasper Morrison’s Place sofa. Some would say that Vitra often uses daring color schemes, but I would only consider it daring for those who do not know exactly what they are doing.

Design for all ages

My colleague James knows full well how important it is to introduce design at a young age. What a lucky nephew receiving a Junior Panton Chair from Vitra for his 1st Birthday!

Here are some other great pieces children can enjoy.
