We, the Inform Interiors Kitchens & Bath department, were given an opportunity to introduce Patricia Urquiola to a few select members of the Vancouver design community over lunch in our B&B Italia/Boffi showroom during her recent visit. Guests were greeted with a glass of Manciant Cremant de Bourgogne at the Boffi Salinas island in our front window, designed by none other than Patricia.

Making our way past many other of Patricia’s creations for B&B Italia, we made our way up to the dining area. Fresh and flavourful, Chef Lucais Syme of Cinara, with his team, presented creations of their own – salad of Roast Beets, Ricotta & Mutsu Apple, Pistachio Vinaigrette followed by Risotto with Brown Butter Roast Celeriac, Parmigiano, Sage & Red Wine Reduction. We finished with Dark Chocolate Torte with Poached Cherries, Peach Butter, Cocoa Nibs & Chocolate Sorbet for dessert.

Patricia was very gracious with her time, answering questions and providing insight into her design process. For those fortunate enough to have a seat, it was an incredible opportunity.

To simply share this amazing meal with one of the great designers of our time would have been more than enough but as the meal progressed, it was evident that there was so much more happening around us.

Perhaps it was the tantalizing flavours or the smooth libations but everyone seemed to open themselves up a little more than usual making it feel less like a creative/business affair and more of a Sunday family diner when old friends catchup on what they’ve been up to lately. Moments were shared, ideas exchanged, acquaintances renewed. What started as a special event centred around a single personality became a gathering of colleagues, some who had worked together, some who only knew each other through name and reputation.

The afternoon reminded us what we love about design; how the process is not just about the designer, but about those the designer touches. Great design transcends tactile forms and greatly affects our quality of life… and great designers transcend their objects and personalities, they provoke, inspire and bring people together in a way that only they understand.

Grazie Mille Patricia!
