Carlo Mollino

_
I have always held a great appreciation and admiration for Carlo Mollino. He was a true renaissance man of the 20th century. He is mainly known as a designer of hand-made furniture and exclusive interiors.

He designed a double-torpedo race car for the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans of 1955.

A keen alpinist, he wrote a book on the technique of downhill skiing.

Mollino loved the Classical World as much as Art Nouveau; he was particularly fascinated by female sensitivity, both as a photographer and a designer.

_

Last summer I had the chance to visit my favourite museum in Paris, the Pompidou. The museum was featuring one of his original pieces, the Bureau en contre-plaque cintre (plywood coat hanger desk).

Furniture companies like Zanotta still produce versions of Mollino’s desk. Zanotta’s version, appropriately titled ‘Cavour Desk – Homage to Carlo Mollino’, has been in production for the past 6 years.

The ‘Mollinoesque’ style can also be seen in the Omaggio desk by Ceccotti which has been on our showroom floor the past couple months.

The quality and craftsmanship of Ceccotti is simply like no other, and although the desk is now sold and will unfortunately be leaving us, I am pleased it is headed to a good home where it will be appreciated forever.
