Hästens | Passion for Beds

Though Hästens has been around since 1852, you may have never heard of them. As Canadians, we have been ignorant to true, divine sleeping comfort – few select retailers in Canada carry the brand and only since 2007.

If you find yourself questioning the value of Hästens and a great night’s sleep, please take note: The Swedish royal palace is outfitted with Hästens, as well as the best hotels around the world. The Hästens store in Beverly Hills is selling vast amounts of Hästens to undisclosed celebrities and those who really appreciate the value of a great night’s sleep. In Scandinavia, Hästens has become a status symbol – you will even see bedroom doors left ajar simply to show off the iconic blue stripes which are unique to the brand.

Forget everything that you knew about purchasing a mattress, Hästens does not abide by preconceived notions nor do they follow trends or hold any interest in cutting corners to save time and/or money. Only one goal interests Hästens, that is to offer the ultimate sleeping conditions to the world, no matter the cost.

The average Canadian spends $1,000 to $5,000 on new mattresses every 3 to 10 years. Right out of the gate, we can see the added value of owning a Hästens – they are guaranteed for 25 years and reportedly last over 50 years, with minimal degradation.

This production video will give you a sense of how serious Hästens’ approach to comfort is.

All of the materials that make up a Hästens mattress come from the earth, are naturally treated without preservatives or chemicals. Hästens is exclusive among bed manufacturers by having all of their beds awarded the Swedish Svan environmental certification, as well as attaining the standards set by Öko-Tex and Möbelfakta for home and public environment.

Horse hair

Few materials can match horsehair when it comes to making a bed. Horsehair comes with its own, extremely effective, built-in ventilation system. Moisture passes through the hollow strands so quickly that if you wet horsehair with water and give it a shake, it dries straight away. So horses have their own air conditioning system that keeps them dry in the heat of summer. This quick-drying property is perfect for a mattress because body temperatures often transform into moisture in the form of perspiration.

Wool-Cotton blend

In the right bed you won’t feel sweaty. You will stay dry and comfortable all night at the temperature that is right for your body. That’s why you’ll sleep much better. All Hästens beds and mattresses are upholstered in the finest quality cotton. In addition a layer of cotton wadding is placed directly under the fabric, making it especially soft to lie on. Pure new wool is used as stuffing in Hästens beds. Wool is an important component in the membrane that regulates the temperature of the bed and ensures outstanding comfort.

Flax

Flax is one of the oldest cultivated crops, popular through the ages thanks to its combination of strength, elasticity and ability to absorb moisture. Hästens uses flax underneath and between the spring systems, and in some cases above the springs. The flax padding is extremely durable and flexible, and it also minimises and diverts static electricity.

Steel

With a Hästens bed you can enjoy the latest technology in bed springs. Hästens’ new patented spring system, combined with our special tempered Swedish springs, make our beds wonderfully soft on the surface with comfortable support at every level.

Pine

The bed frame gives Hästens beds remarkable strength and stability – Built from solid pine from the north of Sweden, which is grown slowly for maximum strength. All of the wooden slats in a Hästens bed frame rest on the strong outer beams or are situated in grooves cut into the beams. The slats are also nailed into place giving the bed frame even more strength and stability. This means two things: you’ll hardly notice if your partner moves in bed, and the bed will be extremely quiet.

In 2008, Wallpaper* teamed up with Hästens and asked Angela Missoni, Jaime Hayon, Satyendra Pakhalé and NEL Colectivo to make their bedroom fantasies come true. Here along with the image of their bed of dreams is a Q&A with each designer to explain how they interpreted the project, their affinity to Hästens and what they think is the future of bed design.

A little over one year ago, alongside the world’s premier behavioral expert and co-founder of Neuro-Linguistic Programming, Dr. Richard Bandler, Hästens developed the “MindSpa” iPhone app. This powerful introduction program uses what is known as dual induction where a separate voice is provided simultaneously to each ear. Dr. Bandler is a pioneer in this technique. You will also be treated to a delightful proprietary light show designed to help induce deep relaxation.

The app can be purchased via iTunes by clicking here.
