Embrace Colour

Strolling past our Gastown showrooms you will notice our summer window displays are an homage to our inspiration for this season — the artist David Hockney. With Los Angeles as one of his primary muses, Hockney pulls from the Californian palette of bright yellows, greens, blues and pinks. Evoking lush lawns, summer heat and shimmering swimming pools, his fearless use of colour is refreshing and thrilling.

“…If the water surface is almost still and there is a strong sun, then dancing lines with the colours of the spectrum appear everywhere…”     — David Hockney

The vibrant blue hand-painted onto the backdrop and window glass to replicate Hockney’s swimming pool strokes serves as a perfect compliment to the Kettal outdoor settings featured there.

Like Hockney, the Spanish outdoor furniture company Kettal is known for not shying away from colour and finds inspiration from their beach town setting, in this case Barcelona instead of Los Angeles. This season’s display features pieces from Kettal’s Cala, Bitta and Boma collections.

The Cala collection, by design duo Doshi Levien, features dining chairs, tables, and foot stools but is best recognized for its inaugural piece, the Cala Club Chair. The design for this high backed armchair is inspired by the sexy and iconic Emanuelle ‘Peacock’ Chair; here the duo uses rope to create a lattice surround that at once provides privacy and serves as a window to the encompassing landscape. The internationally recognized studio founded by designers Nipa Doshi and Jonathan Levien also designed a range of materials for Kettal — ropes, technical mesh, textiles, and metal coating colours — that illustrate both parties’ love of texture and colour.

The inviting and comfortable Bitta collection, designed by Rodolfo Dordoni, puts these materials to great use. Take for example, the arm chair that combines an aluminum frame with braided polyester cords, a seat cushion and decorative cushion; one can use the Mood Board Tool on the Kettal site to select the colour and finish of each component for a fully customized result.

Also designed by Rodolfo Dordoni is the Boma lounge seating and table collection, which features high performance pieces that don’t sacrifice comfort and coziness. With a wide range of modular components and endless possible configurations the Kettal Planner comes in handy when choosing the perfect furniture combination for your space.

Likewise, the Pavilion Configurator allows one to select from a range of 30+ frame colours and includes multiple options for ceilings, floors, sides and lighting, all adapting easily and efficiently to different uses and environments from ocean front to mountain top. The minimal structural design creates free-flowing open spaces, making the most of its given surroundings while optional movable panels can be closed completely, to protect interiors from inclement weather, and opened completely for spacious enjoyment.

We’re feeling the colours of Kettal this summer and hope to inspire you to add a splash of bold hues to your furniture settings.

Hockney is quoted as once saying, “I prefer living in colour” and we can’t help but to utterly agree.
