An Exploration of Japanese Craftsmanship
On June 13 and 14 we are delighted to welcome four accomplished craftsmen from Japan to our 50 Water Street showroom where they will host workshops and discuss how their work strives to maintain a strong bond to the traditions of their ancestors while looking forward to the needs of future generations. There will be a presentation on Thursday June 14 from 5 to 7pm, click here for more information and to RSVP.
The four Shokunin (the Japanese word for craftsman) come to us from Kyoto — a city that was the capital of Japan for over a thousand years and a place that still carries a commitment to the precise, handmade production of useable objects at a high level of excellence. The shokunin come from generations of production and assume a commitment to the legacy of their crafts — the tools, techniques, materials, time, and spirit.
Together with the craftsmen, we are offering workshops sharing their traditions and skills. An assortment of their handmade objects will be available for purchase. The craftsmen included in this event are Takahiro Yagi (Metal Tea Caddies), Shuji Nakagawa (Wooden Vessels), Toru Tsuji (Wire Weaving), and Tatsuyuki Kosuga (Flower Arrangement).
Each session is $50 per person. Please be sure to select a starting time. Space is limited for all sessions. There is no charge to attend the presentation. Click on the Workshop title(s) that you would like to attend to puchase your ticket(s).
